It’s no secret that drinking and driving is dangerous. But what many people don’t realize is that the consequences of getting a driving under the influence (DUI) charge can be especially severe for teenagers.

If your teenager is facing a DUI charge, it’s important to understand what they’re up against.

It’s a serious offense — no matter what the driver’s age

In Texas, there are severe penalties for those under 21 who get behind the wheel while intoxicated. If they have any alcohol in their system and are operating a vehicle, they can expect the following:

  • License suspension
  • Up to a $500 fine
  • Community service
  • Attend an alcohol awareness program.

Furthermore, anyone over 17 and having a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or greater may receive the following:

  • Fines up to $2,000
  • Up to 180 days in jail
  • Loss of license for up to a year

Having an open and honest conversation with your teenager after they are charged with a DUI is crucial. Remember that this is a difficult situation to navigate, and your goal should be to support them while also helping them understand the consequences of their actions. It’s essential to remind them that you are on their side and that talking about it will help them get through it.

If your child gets caught for DUI, know that resources are available to help them recover from their mistake. And, you will want to work with someone who can help with their defense. Experienced legal guidance can help you obtain the best possible outcome for your child’s case and protect their future.
